Three Vista Breweries, Three Different Endings This Fall

  • October 29, 2026

"There's a sense of loss. It's like when 'Cheers' closed in the last episode," a Vista regular told CalMatters at Prohibition Brewing Company, one of about a dozen regulars drinking the last ales and lagers on East Vista Way.

Three local taprooms reached the same point this year: the people running them could not, or would not, keep going alone. Each one tried a different way of handing over the keys. One family put the whole business up for sale. One couple brought in outside partners to save it. One group of longtime employees took over the room where they already worked. Only the last of those is still moving forward.

Prohibition is offering everything, recipes included

Prohibition Brewing has stood at 2004 E. Vista Way for about 15 years. Kyle Adams told The Coast News that his family's decision to sell is "rooted in joy." His parents, Ron and Kathy, want to retire, and the equity they built in the property since buying it in 2010 makes that possible.

The building dates to the 1960s. When the Adams family bought it, it was a nightclub called D'Elegantes, and Adams said it was in poor condition. The family put years of work and money into renovating it. The sale covers the business name, the building and the property. The family will also negotiate on the brewing equipment, the dining room furniture and the vintage decor, including lithographs of Vista locations. A buyer who wants to keep running it as a restaurant or brewpub can also negotiate for the family's food and beer recipes.

So Prohibition has set itself up to be succeeded, not just closed. Adams pointed to 87 parking spaces and a location on a major road, and he said business was still strong. Timing has been the soft part. San Diego Beer News reported on September 1 that the plan was to close at the end of September, with no sale finalized. By mid-October, the CalMatters story still said the brewery would close that month once the last kegs ran dry. Adams hoped to sell but had no firm plans. As of the latest reporting, no buyer has been announced.

The Roadies tried an outside rescue

The Roadies Brewing opened in August 2024 at 1495 Poinsettia Ave., Unit 148. It was a brewery built around a stage and a sound system. San Diego Beer News described its programming as including an extensive live-music calendar. The owners, Diane and Sean Hilz, closed it the last weekend of August and invited anyone interested in investing to get in touch.

Within weeks, two partners signed on. San Diego Beer News reported the plan. Metrico Hospitality Group, which runs an event venue in Bonsall, would launch a distribution company to get Roadies beer across Southern California. Mexico City Cuisine, a catering business two suites over, would supply food to the taproom so it could open for lunch.

The taproom reopened October 1. According to the owners, the partners asked for that date, and the Hilzes thought it was too early, since they had not yet hired a new head brewer. The first two weeks back were busy. Then both partners withdrew. The owners told San Diego Beer News that Metrico could not raise more capital and that Mexico City Cuisine's owner could not fund the investment he had committed. By then the Hilzes had already hired a new head brewer, a Stone Brewing veteran. The same October 16 report named Sunday, October 18 as the final day of service, "again."

The outside rescue promised to expand the business into distribution, lunch service and a bigger territory, and it depended on new capital arriving from outside the business.

Hop Habit came from inside the building

The third handoff went the other way. In October 2024, several longtime employees of Belching Beaver Brewery started their own beer brand, Hop Habit, and brewed mostly hoppy beers at Belching Beaver's Vista production facility. They poured them at the Pub 980 tasting room. San Diego Beer News lists the team: brewers Thomas Peters and Eric Childress, director of sales Mark Truex, and HR manager Diane Magrath. All four still worked full time for Belching Beaver.

After a quiet stretch, Hop Habit decided in early 2026 to take over the Pub 980 brewery and tasting room and make it the brand's headquarters. A deal to put Hop Habit beers in big grocery stores across Southern California sped that up. Six-packs reached shelves in February with three core beers named simply for their style: West Coast IPA, Tropical Hazy IPA and Hoppy Pale Ale. Two more IPAs, Desk Pop and a hazy called El Niño, are available year-round on draft.

The March plan for the room included Hop Habit beer, seasonal cocktails, and games and activities for families, with the renovation expected to wrap up before the end of spring. In May, the San Diego Union-Tribune described the expansion with an ETA of summer and said Belching Beaver would stay at the 980 Park Center Drive facility in a more limited role. Older directories may still list the address as Belching Beaver, so it's worth calling ahead for current hours.

None of Hop Habit's moves needed a buyer or an investor. The people taking over Pub 980 already knew its equipment, its regulars and its beer. The new label came after they had already been doing the work.

What three handoffs say about 2026

These Vista stories sit inside a countywide trend. San Diego Beer News counted 11 brewery closures in San Diego County in 2024 and 12 in 2025. The same CalMatters piece reported that Sapporo is selling Stone Brewing and closing Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido, the flagship one city over. Erik Fowler, a local brewer and former executive director of the San Diego Brewers Guild, described it as a flattening after a boom.

Vista's own map had already shifted before this fall. Five Suits Brewing appears on the same report's list of 2025 closures. San Diego Beer News also reported that The Lost Abbey moved into Eppig's Vista facility in January 2025 and opened a separate tasting room at 1347 Keystone Way, Suite C. This year the outcome came down to who was taking over and what they already had.
