Indoor Pickleball in Carlsbad: New Clubs, Costs & City Courts

  • October 15, 2026

Carlsbad has exactly six public outdoor pickleball courts. All six are at Poinsettia Community Park, and they have been the city's whole outdoor supply since they opened in 2019. In 2026, two private clubs in the business-park corridor along El Camino Real added 20 indoor courts between them. One held its grand opening in August. The other planned to open in late August and was taking bookings by October.

The city decided in early 2024 to build more courts, and those courts are still in the bidding and contract stage. Private operators opened in the meantime.

Six courts, unchanged since 2019

The city's own project page gives the background. Pickleball came out as a top priority while the previous Parks & Recreation master plan was being written, which is why the Poinsettia courts were built. The updated master plan, approved in 2023, named pickleball a top priority again.

At Poinsettia, the six courts are dedicated and lighted, and they're open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Players wait their turn with a paddle queue instead of booking a court in advance. Indoors, the city runs open play at three community centers: Calavera Hills, Pine Avenue and Stagecoach. The October 2026 schedules list a $3 fee for adults 18 and over.

That's cheap, and it's spread across the city. It's also session-based. You play when a community center gym has pickleball on its calendar, not whenever you have a free hour. The private clubs are built to fill that gap.

The year the business park filled in

Pickleball Republic Carlsbad South

The bigger of the two new clubs grew out of an older one. Shawn and Rufina Walker started The Pickleball Club of Carlsbad near The Shoppes at Carlsbad. The Coast News puts the founding year at 2020, and the club's own history says the doors opened in 2021 with six courts. Longtime members Andy and Tiffany Slipka became partners in 2024. In 2025 the operation took the name Pickleball Republic.

According to The Coast News, Slipka said structural issues at the Shoppes location started the conversations that led to the new venture. The group hopes to grow to three to five locations across the region. The original site didn't go away. Pickleball Republic calls it the North Mall location, "Formerly The Pickleball Club of Carlsbad," at 2561 El Camino Real, and lists the new club as an added location.

The new club is Pickleball Republic Carlsbad South, at 2045 Corte Del Nogal near Palomar Airport Road and El Camino Real. It has 10 indoor courts and two outdoor courts, open seven days a week. It ran as a soft launch for about six months before its Aug. 22 grand opening, which featured exhibition matches by members of the U.S. National Pickleball Team. The building also houses Mahjong Republic, a separate room for games, which you reach through the main lobby instead of the garage entrance.

Walker told the paper the goal is "a country club for everyone," with chairs, tables and couches placed so people stay between games. He also said the weekly intro-to-pickleball class is one of the club's most popular.

The Picklr

The second club comes from a Utah-based franchise. The Coast News reported in June that The Picklr planned a 36,300-square-foot club at 5830 El Camino Real in the Carlsbad Corporate Center, near Upper Deck. Plans included 10 indoor courts with a championship court, a pro shop, event space and instruction, and the opening was targeted for late August. As of Oct. 2, the club's Carlsbad page was taking court bookings and listed hours of 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, so it's up and running even though the exact opening day hasn't been published.

Both clubs sit off El Camino Real, and both have 10 indoor courts. Neither depends on weather, daylight or a community center calendar.

What a session costs across all three tiers

Carlsbad now has three ways to play: the city, a pay-per-session private club and a membership club. The prices below come from each operator's October 2026 listings.

Where Format Price as of October 2026
Poinsettia Community Park 6 lighted outdoor courts, paddle queue, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. No fee listed
Calavera Hills, Pine Avenue, Stagecoach community centers Scheduled indoor open play $3 per adult session
Pickleball Republic Carlsbad South 10 indoor, 2 outdoor courts $5 open play, $7 lunch-break open play
The Picklr Carlsbad 10 indoor courts, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily $99 to $416 per month by membership tier, or a $30 15-day trial

The Picklr's monthly tiers are $149 for Play, $191 for Unlimited and $224 for Pro. Junior Unlimited is $99 and Family Unlimited is $416, and annual billing comes with a discount. The $30 trial covers 15 days of court reservations, open play, leagues and tournaments, plus four clinic passes. The franchise's membership FAQ says nonmember pricing varies by location and directs players to ask their club. Pickleball Republic says one membership covers both of its Carlsbad locations and is advertising limited-time charter pricing. Its public page doesn't show the rates.

The big cost jump is between the two private clubs, not between public and private. A $5 open-play session at Republic costs only slightly more than the city's $3 community center rate. The Picklr is the only one of the four built on a monthly commitment.

The city's courts, on paper and on the calendar

The city's eight new courts are designed and budgeted but not yet under construction. Here's where the city's plan stands, according to its future pickleball courts page:

  1. Feb. 13, 2024: The City Council approved locations and design funding for eight new outdoor courts, four at Stagecoach Community Park and four at Calavera Hills Community Park.
  2. Summer 2026: Staff planned to finalize construction plans and put the project out for bids.
  3. Fall 2026: Staff expect to bring a construction contract to the City Council for approval.
  4. About one year after approval: Construction should be substantially complete.

As of mid-October 2026, the contract vote is still listed as anticipated. The city expects construction to start later this year and take about a year, which means the Stagecoach and Calavera Hills courts won't be ready until sometime in 2027 at the earliest. That's the window the private clubs are serving.

The design choices explain some of the delay. The council chose to build new, dedicated pickleball courts instead of converting existing tennis courts or sharing them, based on feedback from both groups of players. The two parks were picked partly because they're far enough from homes and protected habitat to keep the noise down, and partly because they already have tennis courts, which allows a racquet complex like the one at Poinsettia. The new courts will have lights and noise-reducing matting on the perimeter fencing, and they'll keep park hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Building courts to that standard means more planning than repainting an existing tennis court.

Once the courts are finished, Carlsbad will have 14 public outdoor courts. The approved master plan for the future Robertson Ranch Park includes six more.

The city's other big park project won't add any. Grading started in September at Veterans Memorial Park, near Faraday Avenue and Cannon Road. The 93.7-acre park is planned around trails, viewpoints, playgrounds, fitness areas and a bike park, and more than half the site stays protected habitat. The city's Q&A says the park won't include large sports courts and expects it to open in 2028.

Picking a court this fall

Where you play depends mostly on your schedule. Poinsettia is the only public outdoor option and runs on a first-come queue until 10 p.m. The community centers are the cheapest indoor play at $3, but you have to fit their published sessions. Pickleball Republic's North Mall and South locations offer per-session open play and outdoor courts at South. The Picklr is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day for members and trial users.

If you live near Stagecoach or Calavera Hills, keep an eye on City Council agendas this fall. The construction contract vote is the next step before the courts near you can be built. The city also offers adult pickleball lessons, with online sign-up through its recreation catalog.
