Where to Adopt a Pet in North County

Do you want to turn your North County San Diego house into a home? Then perhaps it’s time to adopt a pet! Studies show that adopting a pet is good for your health and happiness as it can lower your blood pressure and make you feel calmer. And having a dog increases the likelihood that you’ll exercise regularly – that dog isn’t going to walk itself after all. If you’re ready to find a furry best friend, there are many great places in North County that can help. Here are some of our favorites.

Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter

Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter in Carlsbad is a wonderful non-profit that rescues unwanted dogs and cats and finds home for the ones that are adoptable. Adoption fees are very affordable – only $50 for dogs and $40 for cats. The adoption fee includes vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, and a microchip. They also offer spay/neuter assistance by issuing certificates to help with the cost of the surgery, which are redeemable at all Carlsbad veterinary clinics. Check out their website to see some of their available dogs and cats, or drop by the shelter for a visit.

San Diego Humane Society

The San Diego Humane Society was founded in 1880, and it’s the oldest and largest humane society in San Diego County. They have branches in both Escondido and Oceanside. You can view their adoptable animals online or visit one of the branches in person. Adoption fees range from $5 for small birds, mice, rats, and hamsters, to $195 for a puppy that is six months old or younger. Fees may include spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip, free veterinary exam, and pet license.

The Barking Lot

The Barking Lot partners with the Soi Dog Foundation of Thailand to rescue dogs that are part of the illegal dog meat trade in Thailand. They’ve rescued more than 5,000 dogs since 2010, including dogs scheduled for euthanasia at other area shelters and those flown in from Thailand. Browse the available dogs online and then fill out an application. One of their Barking Attendants will be in touch shortly thereafter to schedule a visit.

The Rescue House

If you’re looking for a cat, The Rescue House is the place to find one. This non-profit finds homes for abandoned, homeless, and abused cats. They are a no-kill shelter and find homes for every cat that they take in. Since 1999 they’ve rescued more than 14,000 cats. You can meet their cats in person at one of six area adoption centers, including the PetSmart in Encinitas. Adoption fees range from $100 for a senior cat to $150 for a kitten. This fee includes a veterinarian exam, spay/neuter, vaccination, and microchip. Check their website for some of the adorable cats that are ready for adoption.
