The Filipino Sun Festival is the newest festival to hit Mira Mesa that will celebrate Filipino and Filipino American culture. The 2nd Annual Filipino Sun Festival will be celebrating and sharing Filipino American culture.
The Filipino Sun is historically and geographically significant, as the sun symbolizes unity, freedom, people’s democracy, and sovereignty, while each of the eight rays represent the first eight provinces (Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Laguna, and Batangas) that rose up and started the 1896 Philippine Revolution against Spain.
At the Filipino Sun Festival, there will be traditional and contemporary fun for the whole family in a free festival hosted and presented by Operation Samahan and produced by Silk Road Productions and the community. Produced by the community? Yes! The team assembling this ambitious celebration of Filipino American pride will be made up of people like you who care about the community — Filipino American and non-Filipino American alike.
In addition, visitors can take advantage of the networking pavilion featuring Joon Han. Joon Han is the author on the highly-anticipated upcoming book, “Get Ahead by Giving Back” and you can catch him every week on the “Your Biz Rocks” business podcast. He is also the founder and Strategy Specialist at Better San Diego, a strategic alignment company where he helps smart business leaders grow from being busy to very effective. Although he doesn’t accept many clients these days, Joon is always excited to help out as many people as possible to become “Give Getters” that change the world with their success. Joon enjoys the magicianship of Penn and Teller™ and his pet peeves are when people say, “could care less” instead of “couldn’t” and when someone speaks on leadership when they’ve never led anything in their life. You can connect with Joon on LinkedIn or Twitter and stay on the lookout for new podcasts, training events and other adventures along the way!
This isn’t just another festival; it’s going to be a project that directly involves the youth of Mira Mesa and will let them be involved with the production and marketing of the event. And this will be a sister festival to both the Filipino Arts and Culture Festival, otherwise known as FilAmFest, and the Asian Cultural Festival of San Diego — so you can expect some awesome Filipino American fun!
The Filipino Sun Festival’s Mission is to celebrate, promote, and share Filipino and Filipino American pride, culture, heritage, and history through educational, historical, and cultural activities and programs at the Filipino Sun Festival. Its intent is to bridge the intergenerational, ethnic, and cultural divides within our communities.
Operation Samahan is the host and presenter of the Filipino Sun Festival. Operation Samahan is a community health center that emerged within the Filipino community over the last forty years. The agency serves low-income families and individuals in the County of San Diego in two (2) strategic areas with a high density population of Filipinos/Asian and other low-income, uninsured individuals — National City (Southern San Diego County) and Mira Mesa (North Central San Diego).
