Did things around your North County home start to get a little out of hand over the holidays? When you’re busy, it’s easy to let clutter pile up. But if you’ve recently moved or you’re preparing to move, then it’s time to get that clutter under control. The beginning of the New Year is a great time to get organized. Here’s how to jumpstart your efforts.
Pack up and store holiday decorations
First things first – take the time to properly pack up and store your holiday decorations. Resolve to only pack away items that you’d like to use again next year. This means finally figuring out which strands of lights work and which ones do not. Organize everything neatly into marked boxes. You’ll thank yourself next year! Purge and donate
Was Santa good to you this year? While receiving gifts is one of the nicest parts of the holiday season, it also means you need to find space for those goodies. As you’re putting your new treasures away, resolve to purge and donate your unused items as well. Tackle those closets, garages, and attics. Discard items that are broken or beyond repair. Give away or donate items you no longer need or use. You can even schedule a time to have your donations picked-up from your home – including your car!
Tackle the kitchen
Was your kitchen the scene of a culinary crime over the last few weeks? With all the celebrating and hosting we do over the holidays, our kitchens can take a real beating. Devote an afternoon to doing a deep clean of your kitchen, including floors and windows. Go through your refrigerator and toss out expired food. Do the same in the pantry. While you’re at it, you may also find some non-perishables you don’t need that can be donated to the North County Food Bank. Stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables to kickstart your New Year’s diet.
Did paperwork pile up all over your home in 2018? You’re not alone. It seems like paperwork has a way of multiplying and taking over every available surface. Start 2019 with a clean slate and clean and organize your paperwork. First, find a central location that can be a dedicated space for your paperwork. Toss out all receipts that you don’t need for your taxes. Eliminate more paperwork by going paperless when possible. Sign up for online bill paying and agree to have statements sent electronically.
Organize your schedule
Finally, don’t forget to give some attention to your schedule. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by everything we have to do. One way to ease that stress is to stay on top of those obligations. Establish a command center in your home and keep a calendar with everyone’s appointments, meetings, practices, and so on. Make a to-do list and keep it current. Most importantly, find time to devote to the things you love to do, like spending time with family and friends.
