Yes, going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day is traditional. But who says you can’t create a memorable romantic experience that doesn’t involve a hefty bill? That’s why we’ve curated a list of alternative romantic destinations in North County to celebrate with your loved one. Cheers to love!
Explore the tide pools
North County San Diego has an amazing intertidal ecosystem where you can discover interesting sea life during low tide. The perfect time to explore the tide pools is from November to March, so this is an excellent idea for a romantic Valentine’s Day stroll with your special someone. Some of the best places in the area to explore are Cardiff State Beach and Carlsbad Tide Pools.
Drink craft beer and star gaze
Who knew that craft beer and stargazing go hand-in-hand? Apparently, they do at Wavelength Brewing Company in Vista. Beer couldn’t exist without science, so they have regular science programming in their tasting room. They have a partnership with OPT Telescopes and they regularly fill their tasting room with a variety of telescopes so that you and your date can view the night sky. Check their Facebook page for updates on upcoming events.
Relax in a meditation garden
Sometimes you just need to have a quiet stroll in a beautiful place with the one you love, right? You’ll find that at the Meditation Gardens. Located at the Self Realization Fellowship in Encinitas, this blissful place is full of plants, peaceful nooks, koi ponds, and outstanding ocean views. They’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sundays from 11am to 5pm.
Visit a museum
You don’t have to travel far to have a fun afternoon at a world-class museum. Museums are a great place for a romantic date, especially if your loved one is interested in a specific topic. Some of the best museums in the area include the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum in Vista, the California Surf Museum in Oceanside, and the Oceanside Museum of Art.
Enjoy an outdoor performance
Living in North County San Diego means enjoying beautiful, temperate weather all year long. At Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista, you can enjoy picnicking and dining while taking in a live performance all throughout the year. On February 16 they are presenting Spencer Day: The Look of Love. The show features original songs and innovative takes on standards.
Take a cooking class
Finally, learn how to cook a romantic dinner with your date at one of North County’s many cooking classes. Some of the great places to check out include Sur La Table in Carlsbad, Cook With Jason in Solana Beach and Del Mar, and CozyMeal in Carlsbad and Oceanside where you can learn about vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free baking.
