Prep Your North County Home for Fall

Though here in sunny Southern California we don’t have to worry about snow, we do experience some seasonal changes. Autumn in North County San Diego can bring with it more rain, cooler temperatures, and even an occasional overnight frost. For these reasons, it’s important to prep your North County home for fall. Here’s a handy checklist to remind you of the regular maintenance tasks you should complete in the coming weeks.

Maintain your HVAC system

Your furnace has taken the summer off, so be sure to have it tuned-up before the temperatures drop. Maintaining your furnace will help you to avoid expensive repairs and prolong its life. While you’re at it, change your furnace filter. When filters are clogged, it can be difficult to maintain the temperature in your home. Ideally, you should check your filters once a month. And if you haven’t already, install a programmable thermostat. It will help you save on energy costs throughout the year.

Inspect windows and doors

Inspect all the weather stripping and caulk around doors and windows and replace as needed. Those small leaks can add up and really increase your heating bill. Clean your windows and keep your curtains open during the day. This will allow the sunlight to help heat your home.

Prep fireplace

If your home has a wood-burning fireplace, have it professionally inspected and cleaned before using it this fall. Make sure the damper is working properly and the flu can be easily opened and closed.

Clean gutters

Dead leaves and other debris can clog gutters during the fall season, which is when Southern California experiences the most rain. Clogged gutters can cause numerous problems, including leaks, so be sure to remove all debris before the rainy season gets here in November.

Check roof

Since we are approaching the rainy season, you should also check your roof for missing or broken shingles. Replace shingles as necessary.

Clean up the yard

Fall is the best time to clean up your yard. Remove dead branches, trim shrubs and bushes, and remove spent annuals. Rake up leaves and compost them. Add mulch to flower beds. Not only will this spruce up your curb appeal, but it can also help protect your home from fires.

Prepare for frost

Although we don’t experience many days of below-freezing temperatures, they do occasionally occur. Be ready to protect your plants with sheets if overnight temperatures drop. Protect your outdoor plumbing by installing pipe wraps.

Prepare your lawn

If you have grass, then fall is the best time to reseed and fertilize your lawn. Although it doesn’t look like the grass is growing, it is developing its root system.
