Is there anything better than a summer vacation? Taking time off to relax, unwind, and have some fun is the best elixir for whatever ails you. And while it’s always wonderful to be able to take an exotic vacation to a far-off land, it isn’t always possible. Lucky for you taking a staycation in San Diego couldn’t be easier. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best staycation options around the area. And the best part? These are all trips you can take with your pet! Just hop in the car and have a good time without hiring a pet sitter or leaving your best friend at a kennel.

Relax in the sand and surf

The most obvious staycation idea in San Diego is a day at the beach. There are so many gorgeous beaches here in Southern California, and many of them welcome dogs. Coronado Dog Beach allows off-leash dogs on the west part of the beach year round. The Original Dog Beach on the north end of Ocean Beach is also an off-leash playground any time during the day. You can also enjoy a full day of off-leash fun at Fiesta Island.

Enjoy a tasting at a winery or brewery

San Diego and the surrounding area are known as an excellent region for growing and producing wine. Many a lazy afternoon has been spent sampling wines from the gorgeous patios of tasting rooms in Temecula, North County and beyond. Some of the wineries in the area that are friendly to dogs include:

Have an outdoor adventure

If you and your best friend are adventure buddies, there is plenty of fun to be had together. Or take your buddy to the Cardiff Dog Days of Summer in August. This free event features more than 100 dog-related vendors, dog contests, live music, food trucks, and more. All dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash. You and your dog can mix and mingle all day long!

Make it a sleepover

Sometimes its nice to include an overnight stay at a hotel during your staycation, and there are several hotels in San Diego that allow pets. They include:
