Local Ways to Give Back This Thanksgiving

Now that November is here, we think it’s safe to say that the giving season is upon us. With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, this is a great month to express your gratitude and give back. Whether it’s through a charitable donation or volunteering your time, there are numerous ways you can show you care. Here are some of our local favorites.

Brother Benno’s

Brother Benno’s has been serving the poor and homeless in North County San Diego since 1983. Located in Oceanside, this organization offers 12-step programs, a soup kitchen, monthly food boxes for families, free clothing and laundry services, hot showers and hygiene items, and much more. They are always looking for volunteers, and they hold a volunteer tour on the first Saturday of every month at 9am. They also accept donations of money, food, clothing, goods, and cars. In addition, they run an excellent Thrift Shop with affordable prices. They’ve been given a four-star rating on Charity Navigator and have served more than 4 million meals since their beginning.

Hospice of the North Coast

If you have the simple desire to help others, then Hospice of the North Coast in Carlsbad is a great place to volunteer. Volunteers are the heart of their organization and can commit time in a variety of ways, including supporting patients and families, participating in special events, or staffing their resale shop. Volunteer applications are available online. In addition, they accept monetary donations as well as gently used clothing, accessories, and household items for their resale shop.

North County Food Bank

North County Food Bank provides nutritious food to approximately 370,000 people per month in San Diego County. That’s 26 million pounds of food a year! They are located in San Marcos and offer lots of ways to get involved with their mission to advocate for the hungry. You can host a food drive, donate directly to their warehouse, participate in Run for the Hungry on Thanksgiving morning, or volunteer. No training is required, there are no minimum time commitments, and anyone who is at least 11 years old can volunteer – this is a great choice to get the whole family involved!

Adopt a Marine for Thanksgiving

Camp Pendleton ASYMCA’s Home Hospitality program will once again offer locals the opportunity to Adopt a Marine for Thanksgiving. The program places Marines from the School of Infantry into community members’ homes for Thanksgiving dinner. Since their training schedule does not allow enough time for them to go home for the holiday, this great program gives them the chance to share a holiday meal with a friendly family. Volunteers are assigned two Marines and they must be picked up and returned to the school at the designated times. What a great way to show some love to our military!
