Things are heating up and summer will soon be in full swing! Although North County San Diego is known for its year-round temperate weather, there are some days where the temperature can soar. Thankfully, there are plenty of places in the area to cool down. Here are some of our favorite places to go when we need to beat the heat.
CHIMA Water Park at LEGOLAND
LEGOLAND is one of the best places in North County to have fun with the kids. And now you can have even more fun at their water park! CHIMA Water Park is full of so many exciting water attractions that you won’t even notice the heat. Race down one of six slides at Riptide Racers, or head to Wipeout Lagoon to make a splash in the water jets. Kids who love to build things will get a kick out of Build-a-Raft River, while the youngest of your brood will love the Duplo Splash Safari. And that’s just a sampling of what this water park has in store for your family. CHIMA Water Park is open every day until September 2. It’s located inside LEGOLAND and requires you purchase admission tickets to the park, so make a whole day of it!
If you really need some ice-cold relief, then head to Ice-Plex Escondido. This indoor skating facility is San Diego’s largest, and they have two Olympic-sized ice rinks! They offer public skating sessions every day of the week as well as several kinds of programs for people of all ages. Take beginning hockey or skating classes, or book a broomball session for a group. General admission passes begin at $8 for adults and $6.50 for kids 12 and under. For a small additional fee, you can rent skates. Or splurge on a semi-annual or annual pass so you can enjoy the ice rinks all year.
San Marcos splash pads
For those of you who live near San Marcos, get some relief from the summer heat at one of several splash pads. This is a great way to enjoy the water safely, especially with younger children. Splash pads have hand-activated water features and are located at several parks within San Marcos, including:
- San Elijo Park at 1105 Elfin Forest Road
- Discover/Lakeview Park at 650 Foxhall Drive
- Buelow Park at 300 Autumn Drive
- Sunset Park at 909 Pruesta del Sol
- Mulberry Park at 751 Mulberry Drive
Finally, Wave Waterpark in Vista is the place to go for all kinds of summer water fun! This facility features a wave pool, a Slide Tower with four slides, a Rip Tide slide for tubing, a Crazy River, a Spray Park and more. No matter who you have in tow, they will love this park! Register for mermaid classes or flow rider lessons, or train to be a junior lifeguard. Wave Waterpark is open through September 29. Daily passes are $20.95 for those over 42” tall and $16.95 for those under 42”. You can also purchase family and individual season passes. Check their website for pricing information.
