Just because you live in North County San Diego doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your favorite winter activities. Though it’s unlikely you’ll be making snowmen in your front yard anytime soon, you can still get in some winter fun. And if ice skating happens to be on your list of fun things to do, you’re in luck! There are several fabulous places in the area to lace up and practice your toe loops and axels – or at least try not to fall down.
IceTown in Carlsbad is a year-round rink, so you don’t have to wait until winter descends to get into the holiday spirit. They have open skating sessions every day; price is $12 for general admission and $3 for skate rental. They also have all kinds of fun activities happening throughout the year including youth and adult hockey, figure skating, a skating academy, skating clinics, broomball, and curling, among others. You can even have your birthday party there!
Ice-Plex Escondido is the largest ice skating facility in San Diego. It is home to two Olympic-sized ice rinks and offers public skating sessions every day of the week. They also offer an array of activities throughout the year including ice hockey, skating school, and broomball. For the best deal, head to Ice-Plex on Friday nights. For a mere $5, you’ll get both ice-skating admission and skate rental from 8:30-10:30pm.
UTC Ice Sports Center
Combine shopping and skating when you hit UTC Ice Sports Center. It’s the only ice-skating rink in San Diego that’s located inside the Westfield UTC Shopping Centre. Hit the ice and then take in a holiday movie with the family at the Arclight Theater. There are public skating sessions available every day. General admission is $15, and skate rental is $5. Save money by buying your tickets in advance.
Skating by the Sea
What’s better than a fun afternoon of ice-skating? A fun afternoon of beachfront ice-skating, of course! That’s one of the best things about enjoying winter in San Diego – you don’t have to give up summer in order to do it. Skating by the Sea happens from November 22 to January 1 at the iconic Hotel del Coronado. You’ll get spectacular views of the ocean while you enjoy the ice, and the proceeds benefit Make-A-Wish San Diego. You can even reserve your own rink side lounge, which comes with its own roaring fire as well as food and beverage service. They’re even open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day!
Viejas Casino & Resort
Finally, if you want to experience Southern California’s largest outdoor ice rink, then be sure to visit Viejas Casino & Resort. Located in Alpine, the whole place gets decked out in its holiday finest, including spectacular lights and a seasonal water show. The ice rink is open daily through December (including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) and the first week of January. It is then open Fridays – Sundays through the end of January.
