Starting a new relationship is never easy. While you can get caught up in the excitement, it takes time to get to know the other person and to discover both their wonderful qualities and their quirks. The same can be said about your new North County home. Though it’s so exciting to finally close the deal and move in, it can take a little while to truly fall in love with your new place. Here’s some tried-and-true advice about how to start a lasting relationship with your new home.
Unpack right away
First of all, you’re never going to fall in love with your new home if you’re staring at piles of unpacked boxes. A home never truly feels like it’s yours until your stuff is in it. So get unpacking, pronto! Make it a priority to unpack all your boxes as quickly as possible. Yes, it can be stressful – but putting off the task isn’t going to make it any easier. Once you begin unboxing all your personal possessions, the home will feel more and more like your own. And be sure to remove the empty boxes as well. There are many ways you can easily unload those boxes without throwing them away.
Clean and style
Even if your new home feels spic and span, it doesn’t hurt to give each room a once-over when you move in. This will help you get to know all the nooks and crannies in your new space. It’ll also put your mind at ease that it really is clean and fresh. Once you’ve given each room a good cleaning, it’s time to style all those things you just unpacked. This is where the real fun can begin. Try to look at your possessions with a new set of eyes. Maybe that chair you’ve always used in your bedroom would look amazing in the family room. Switch up where you normally put things – it will give you a fresh perspective and can make you appreciate what you have that much more. Switch out framed photos and surround yourself with the things and people you love most. Pick up a couple of new plants and some scented candles to make your home feel cozy and inviting from the get-go.
Let’s be honest – your home encompasses so much more than just the house you live in. Your neighborhood also impacts your well-being, so take some time to get to know it. Take a break from unpacking and go for a walk around your new neighborhood. Find out what amenities are nearby and visit them – whether it’s a park, a museum, or a great restaurant. Take a drive for no other reason than to explore. Getting comfortable in your new home also means learning about the neighborhood where you live.
Have a party
The best part of moving into a new home is sharing it with those you love. Don’t wait until the house feels “perfect” to throw yourself a housewarming party. Make it a low-key affair and let your loved ones see your home as the work-in-progress that it is. You never know, they may have some great ideas about how to live in the space that will make you fall in love with it even more.
