How To Beat the Heat in North County

While North County San Diego is known for its year-round temperate weather, we can get a hot day or two, especially in August. That’s why it’s good to know all the best places to beat the heat. From coastal breezes to indoor ice-skating rinks, there are a number of fun ways to cool down on a hot summer’s day. Here are some of our favorite places.

Spend the day at the beach

This one seems pretty obvious, but we’ll say it anyway. When you need to cool off, one of the best places to do that is the beach! North County San Diego has one of the best stretches of beaches in the state with dozens of places to head on a hot day. And there are plenty of ways to have fun at the beach. You can surf, swim, explore tide pools, play beach volleyball, or simply build a sandcastle under a beach umbrella. Just be aware that the beach is a popular destination on a sunny day. So get there early to get a parking spot, and don’t forget your sunscreen!

Go ice skating

If the idea of being out in the sun is too much for you, then head inside to stay cool. For those who want a frosty adventure, there are several indoor ice-skating rinks in North County. Many of these rinks offer public skating sessions as well as lessons and leagues. You can even plan to have your birthday party at one of them!

Shop for school clothes

We hate to bring it up, but school is just around the corner. One great way to escape from the heat of summer is to head to the mall for some school shopping. Westfield North County in Escondido and The Shoppes at Carlsbad are two great places to find the perfect outfit for the first day of school. Make a day of it by stopping for lunch at one of the mall’s dining areas, get your nails done, or take in a movie.

Head to a museum

For a little culture with those cool temperatures, head to one of the many wonderful museums we have here in North County. Those who love a good tune will enjoy an afternoon at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad. Learn all about the history of surfing at the California Surf Museum in Oceanside. Or have a day of interactive learning and play at the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum in Escondido.

Hit the water park

Finally, you can’t go wrong with a day spent at CHIMA Water Park at LEGOLAND! Build a LEGO raft, slide through the mouth of a crocodile, or take a thrilling ride down a water slide. There is so much fun to be had at this water park, you’ll want to go back again and again.
