Get Your North County Home Ready for a Second Wave

Fall is upon us and winter will soon be here. Experts predict we’ll likely see a second wave of the coronavirus in the next few months, which means more time spent at home. Fortunately, here in North County San Diego we have an excellent climate. This means we’ll be able to spend time outdoors more than those in other parts of the country. Nonetheless, it’s time to start thinking about ways we can spruce up our homes to prepare for a winter spent mostly inside. Here are our best tips for making your North County home convenient and welcoming this fall and winter.

Get your home office squared away

Are you one of the millions of Americans who are now working from home? If WFH is still somewhat new to you, you may have simply cobbled together a working space. With many jobs extending their in-office hiatus or permanently moving to remote work, it’s time to give yourself a proper working space. Having a clear working space that is separate from your living space is essential for your well being. If you have a spare room, then invest in some upgrades that will make it more conducive to work. If not, you can still carve out a private working space in a corner of the living room, underneath a stairwell, or even in a converted closet.

Extend your garden season

Here in Southern California we have the rare privilege of being able to garden all year long. If you haven’t already done so, then consider growing winter vegetables in your backyard garden. Or spruce up your yard with plants and annuals that do well in the winter months like succulents and pansies. It’s also a great time to bring the outdoors in with a selection of houseplants. Plants and flowers can really enliven your home and buoy your spirits while we’re waiting out this pandemic.

Get your outdoor space ready for cooler weather

Though we have the luxury of being able to use our outdoor spaces all year round, you can enjoy them more if you prepare them for cooler weather. Invest in a patio heater so you can dine al fresco when the temperatures dip. Install a gas fire pit so you can enjoy a comfortable night under the stars. Or maybe it’s time to finally get that backyard hot tub you’ve been dreaming about.

Keep the lights on

Although we have the benefit of wonderful weather in the fall and winter, it still gets dark early. Dark winter months can make many feel depressed, so it’s important to keep your living spaces well lit. Turn on the lights on dark days to make your space more upbeat. It’s also a great time to consider investing in smart bulbs like the Philips Hue system. You can program the lights to automatically turn on and off, and the color possibilities are virtually limitless. At night, create a cozy ambiance with scented candles and string lights.
