Do your summer vacation plans include camping? If so, you’ll be delighted to know that you don’t have to venture far from home to enjoy a camping adventure. From beach camping to “glamping,” there are plenty of places nearby to enjoy sleeping under the stars. Here are some of our local favorites.
South Carlsbad State Beach
Located on the southern border of Carlsbad, South Carlsbad State Beach is a fantastic spot for beachside camping. The campground is located on the bluff overlooking the ocean. A stairwell takes you down to the beach where you can enjoy strolling, surfing, swimming, fishing and picnicking. No matter what kind of camping you prefer – whether it’s tent camping or having the luxuries of a fully outfitted RV – you can do it here. There are 222 campsites total, and spots can accommodate a motor home up to 35 feet long.
Guajome Regional Park
Another great choice for local camping is Guajome Regional Park in Oceanside. This beautiful park is located just eight miles from the Pacific Ocean and offers 4.5 miles of trails. You’ll encounter many habitats, including chaparral, wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands. Enjoy bird watching or fishing at the two ponds in the park. There are also playgrounds for the kids, a basketball court, and plenty of places to picnic. There are 33 campsites that accommodate tents or RVs, as well as a rustic cabin to rent.
San Diego Zoo Safari Park
If you’re looking for a more exotic camping adventure, then head to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for a Roar & Snore Safari. There are sleepovers for both families and just adults, so don’t feel like you’re missing out if you don’t have kids. All the sleepovers include checking out the wildlife after the sun goes down, a campfire program, an evening snack, and breakfast the next morning. There are different tent styles to choose from including a vista tent, which looks out over the African Plains, and the premium tent, which comes with a queen-sized bed and two cots. Prices start at $145 per person.
If all this roughing it sounds awful to you, then you should check out the glamping experience at Camp Ribbonwood. Located in Warner Springs, this rustic retreat is the perfect place to unwind and commune with nature without getting too dirty. Their safari tent is located on a private ranch and includes a bathroom and kitchen. You’ll also enjoy a hot tub, a charcoal barbecue with an attached pizza oven, and a fenced deck. This retreat is best for couples looking for a little privacy. You’ll likely see a variety of wildlife including deer, quail, turkey, fox, and bobcat. If you need some adventure, there are plenty of outdoor activities nearby such as hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and kayaking. This place is a real treat!
