Spring is finally here! Are you ready to get your garden in shape for the season, but you’re feeling a lack of inspiration? Don’t worry – there are so many gorgeous gardens in North County where you can get ideas to make your home garden fabulous. These are some of our favorites.
San Diego Botanic Garden
San Diego Botanic Garden is the Big Daddy of them all. This outdoor wonderland features more than 5,000 plant species in 29 themed gardens on 37 acres. They’re open 9am to 5pm daily, and admission is $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and active military, and $10 for kids ages three to 18. San Diego County residents get in free on the first Tuesday of every month. If you’d like a docent-guided tour, head to the garden on Saturday morning. They offer a free tour at 10:30am that departs from the gift shop (where you’re sure to get some inspiration to take home with you).
Buena Creek Gardens
If you’re looking for a peaceful place to visit, then head to Buena Creek Gardens in San Marcos. More than just a nursery or a garden, Buena Creek Gardens offers both display gardens for inspiration and four acres of a retail nursery to browse. They specialize in new and uncommon flowering shrubs, perennials, and vines as well as drought-tolerant species that are perfect for our Southern California climate. They are open Friday and Saturday from 11am to 4pm and Sunday from 11am to 3pm.
Palomar College Arboretum
Another San Marcos gem is the Palomar College Arboretum. The entire campus has been designed as a Level II arboretum and is the only community college in California with that distinction. It’s located on a five-acre hillside that has been planted with trees, palms, and bamboos from all over the world. In addition, they operate the Cactus and Succulent Garden, which features about 40 individual gardens that demonstrate concepts such as xeriscaping and landscaping with fire-resistant plants. The arboretum is free and open to the public, but the Cactus and Succulent Garden can be seen by appointment only.
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens in Vista not only provides beautiful gardens, but it also has amazing views and an extensive collection of art. This garden is a community-gathering place, and art is integrated throughout, providing a showcase for local artists. Some of the themed gardens to explore include the California Natives Garden, the Antique Rose Collection, the Jungle Garden, and the Medicinal Herb Garden. They’re open 7am to 5pm Monday through Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5.
If you’re in the market for some specialty plants, then be sure to visit Waterwise Botanicals in Bonsall. They have acres of growing grounds, which include demonstration gardens, ponds, a shade house and a nursery. Bring a snack and enjoy a picnic in the Cottage Garden or at the picnic tables next to the ponds. You’ll probably also spot some wildlife while you’re there, including lizards, birds, fish, and frogs. They are open Monday through Saturday from 8am to 5pm.
