Now that the days are getting longer and spring is finally here, you’re probably looking for some local adventures you can enjoy with your kids. Even though we boast year-round temperate weather here in North County, there’s something about the beginning of spring that beckons us to head outdoors. If you’re looking to spend some quality time with the family, try one of these activities on for size.
Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch
Spring is the perfect time to take the family to the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. From now until mid-May, you can enjoy almost 50 acres of blooming ranunculus flowers that blanket the landscape in dazzling displays of color. While you’re there you can take an antique tractor wagon ride, visit the artist gardens, look for gems at the Carlsbad Mining Company, or find your way through the Sweet Pea Maze.
Hit up one of North County’s most popular parks before the summer crowds arrive. There are more than 60 rides in LEGOLAND that are geared towards kids. In addition, there are a wide variety of other attractions such as the Deep Sea Adventure, the Sea Life Aquarium, and the Water Park.
San Diego Zoo Safari Park
Another hugely popular attraction for families is the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Located in Escondido, you can currently see the new cheetah cubs at the Animal Care Center in Nairobi Village. Or visit the Butterfly Jungle where you can walk through a greenhouse full of butterflies of all shapes, colors, and sizes. This attraction is open until May 12, so be sure to get there before it’s gone!
Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch
Kids who love history and adventure will love an afternoon at the Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch in Carlsbad. Take a walking tour of the 27-acre park and admire the historic structures of the Hacienda Compound. The kids will love seeing the peacocks who are allowed to travel freely around the ranch. Many visitors come just for that!
The Museum of Making Music
The Museum of Making Music is another can’t-miss attraction in Carlsbad for the family. If your children love music, then they will thoroughly enjoy a visit to this unique museum, where music is part of the experience. Go back in time through themed galleries and see examples of vintage instruments. Their current special exhibit showcases the history of accordions and lets you try one out for yourself!
Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum
Finally, if your child is really into trains and machines, take them to the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum in Vista. This unusual museum displays examples of machines from the early days of American farm and rural communities. All the machines are maintained in working condition and are often operated during special events. Kids can even sign up to take a blacksmithing class with an adult!
