One of the best things about living in North County San Diego is the abundance of natural beauty. There are so many gorgeous natural spaces where you can get out with your family and enjoy Mother Nature, beautiful views, and fresh air. While there are literally dozens and dozens of trails to choose from, here are some of our local favorites.
Sea Wall Trail – Carlsbad
The Sea Wall Trail in Carlsbad is an ADA-accessible, one-mile path that is a favorite of walkers and runners in the area. Some of the trail runs alongside the Coast Highway, making it a great place to spy dolphins. Access the trail by the bathrooms at Tamarack State Beach.
Agua Hedionda Discovery Center Trails – Carlsbad
This beautiful lagoon is home to five short trails that wander through wetlands. It’s the perfect place to experience nature, including birds such as herons, osprey, hawks, and egrets. Before you go, download the AHLF Naturalist app, which allows you to identify flora and fauna found within the preserve.
Guajome Regional Park Trail – Oceanside
If you want to explore a variety of habitats, then head to the Guajome Regional Park. This day-use area features more than four miles of trails that snake through grasslands, woodlands, chaparral, and wetlands. Dogs are welcome as long as they are leashed. Two ponds in the park attract migratory birds. Bring a sack lunch for an afternoon picnic.
Daley Ranch Trails – Escondido
With over 20 miles of trails, Daley Ranch Trails is a great place to get some exercise and take in the gorgeous natural landscape. There are paths for hikers of all skill levels, and it’s perfect for families looking for a day out that everyone can enjoy. They welcome dogs on a leash, and a plant guide is available for $2 at the entrance at La Honda Drive.
Los Jilgueros Preserve Trails – Fallbrook
This popular Fallbrook preserve offers more than two miles of looping trails that meander through both fields and riparian forests. 46 acres of wetland areas, ponds, and mature tree groves make this a great spot for bird watchers. Since it’s right in town, it’s ideal for your daily walk or run.
Copper Creek Falls Trail – San Marcos
If you crave a little more seclusion coupled with a more vigorous workout, then visit Copper Creek Falls. The 2.8-mile trail is family-friendly but offers a few challenging sections. The payoff is the waterfall on the trail, one of the few in the county. Be aware that no pets are allowed on this path.
The Vista Conservancy Trail – Vista
Enjoy North County’s perfect climate and beautiful scenery on the Vista Conservancy Trail. The trail follows along a wandering stream under the branches of native oaks. This easy trail is well-maintained and perfect for families with children. It’s also great for trail running.
