If you love wine, then North County San Diego is the place for you! While most folks may not associate San Diego with vineyards or wineries, it’s actually a great wine-tasting destination. Here’s a look at just a few of the many great places to visit nearby for an afternoon of delicious wines and gorgeous views.
Enjoy a perfectly relaxing afternoon at the beautiful Domain Artefact Estate in Escondido. Located in a valley above San Pasqual, Domaine Artefact specializes in Rhone varietals and one-of-a-kind blends. Have a picnic, take a stroll through the gardens or olive orchards, and meet their family of horses, pigs, chickens, and dogs.
Another Escondido favorite, Altipiano Vineyard is a beautiful place nestled around the owners’ Tuscan-style villa and tasting room. Enjoy stunning views from the private patio, and meet the llamas, chickens, dogs, and cats that also reside on the property. The tasting room is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from noon to 6 pm.
Fallbrook Winery is set on 36 soul-soothing acres nestled between the ocean and the Pala Mesa Mountains. They produce both red and white varietals and offer wine tours by appointment only. The tours include sips of up to five of their award-winning wines. It’s definitely worth the trip — especially since it’s so close by!
Beach House Winery
Visit the first vineyard and winery established in Oceanside! Beach House Winery is located along the ridgeline of the “Sleeping Indian” and gives visitors panoramic views of San Diego County. Their vineyard varietals include Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. They also produce Viognier, Chardonnay, Rose and more in their winery. Contact them to reserve a date and time for a wine tasting.
Located in Vista, Brooking Vineyards is an award-winning vineyard, which focuses on a traditional British style of winemaking. Make an appointment to visit the vineyard and spend up to two hours learning about the area’s wine-making history and the Old World technique used to make their wine. You’ll then sample their wines on the beautiful patio overlooking the ocean. You can’t have a more peaceful day, especially if you love Port and Sherry style wines!
Sunshine Mountain Vineyard
Last but not least, make sure to visit Sunshine Mountain Vineyard in San Marcos. Located on a hilltop, it’s adjacent to the more famous Temecula wine-making region. Here you’ll enjoy panoramic ocean views (and maybe even catch a glimpse of a hot air balloon or two on the horizon!). They currently make red, white and rose varietals from grapes grown on their 10-acre hillside. The tasting room is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 6:30 pm.
