Time is running out to see “Ingenious! The World of Dr. Seuss” at the San Diego History Center!
The highly popular traveling Dr. Seuss exhibition will be available for viewing through December, and includes signature elements for the Balboa Park Centennial, emphasizing San Diego as the renowned author’s home and Theodor Geisel as the world’s most celebrated children’s author and an innovator.
The exhibition will be lively and whimsical, using state-of-the-art technology and engaging visitors in exploratory and immersive experiences. The exhibition will feature rare early works, ephemera, illustration, and editorial cartoons, as well as two newly released Geisel illustrations.
The Seuss-land gallery will feature giant bronze Seuss character sculptures, anchoring interactive family activities that emphasize the important themes and innovative nature of Seuss books.
This colorful and fantastical exhibition immerses visitors in the world of Dr. Seuss, illuminating him as the world’s most beloved children’s author and an artist in his own right. The whimsical, fun-filled experience conveys the exuberance and creative genius in Dr. Seuss books and includes family-friendly activities inspired by underlying themes including: Literacy, the Environment, and Community.
Also featured is Theodor Geisel’s art, particularly inspired by San Diego locales, including rare early works, illustrations, and new releases.
Highlights include the offerings in Gallery 1 (The Cat Behind the Hat). The highly popular traveling Dr. Seuss exhibition includes signature elements for the Balboa Park Centennial that emphasize San Diego as the renowned author’s home and Theodor Geisel as the world’s most celebrated children’s author and an innovator. This gallery may not be suitable for younger audience.
Gallery 2 (The Cat in the Hat) is divided into 6 niches, and welcomes students, families, and the public to interact with, and create, hands-on activities based around the themes of 5 popular Dr. Seuss books: The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Horton Hears a Who, Green Eggs and Ham, and The Lorax.
‘Ingenious! The World of Dr. Seuss’ is normally included with general admission. However, this exhibit is not included with History Center Resident’s free Tuesday admission (2nd Tuesday of the month). On free Tuesday the prices for ‘Ingenious! The World of Dr. Seuss are: $5 adults, seniors, students, military (retired & dependents); $2 youth ages 6-17; Free children ages 0-5, active duty military, SDHC members. Explorer and Go Card pass holders are free but require check in at the Admissions desk. Please call ahead for details.
This exhibition is made possible through a collection of authorized estate editions adapted and reproduced from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original paintings, drawings and sculpture under exclusive permission from his family. The original works, from which the posthumous reproductions were created, are not available for exhibition and remain archived within the Dr. Seuss estate.
