Media Arts Center San Diego is gearing up for eleven fun-filled days of international cinema at the 23rd edition of the San Diego Latino Film Festival taking place from March 10 through March 20, at AMC 18 Simon Fashion Valley Mall.
SDLFF 2016 is once again proud to present to San Diego the incredible diverse amount of genres and movies coming from all over Latin American, Mexico, U.S.A., and Spain. In an effort to help audiences determine which movies to watch out of the over 165 films, film curators have creates unique Showcases celebrating certain countries, genres and themes. A few of the Showcases in this year’s festival include:
Un Mundo Extraño Showcase: With this collection of films from faraway lands, you will get a peek into the fears, fancies, and nightmares of artists who paint with darker hues. The stories contained here range from frighteningly realistic to dreamily fantastical, but all are about emotions some of us are afraid to explore. Co-Presented by Horrible Imaginings Film Festival.
Columbia Film Showcase: The rise in prestige of Colombian cinema can be attributed to various factors: tax incentives for local productions, cash rebates for films fully or partially filmed there, and agencies like Proimágenes Colombia being committed to promoting Colombian cinema in in their homeland and abroad. It’s no surprise that production has surged over the last several years, and as a result, the bounty of quality Colombian films have proven to be irresistible to festivals all over the world, including this one. Even Hollywood has taken notice — this year, Ciro Guerra earned Colombia its first film nomination for Embrace of the Serpent. Despite the incentives and factors of production, one thing remains true (and punctuated by this selection of films): Colombian cinema has proven to be one of the most successful in Latin America because of filmmakers’ implicit understanding of the art of modern, captivating, and original storytelling. It is with the most utmost pleasure that organizers present the line-up of these sure to be remembered Country of Focus Showcase: Colombia.
Latino Americans Showcase: Presented by: National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association, the 23rd Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival is proud to be a partner on this nationwide public programming initiative that supports the exploration of the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos who have helped shape the United States over the last five centuries, and who have become, with more than 50 million people, the country’s largest minority group. Two Episodes of the Latino Americans Series will be spotlighted at SDLFF 2016.
Frontera Filmmakers Showcase: This indispensable showcase celebrates the triumphant cinematic accomplishments of local San Diego / Tijuana filmmakers. The films featured in this showcase have never been more ambitious, artistic, and astounding.
Discovery en Español Showcase: Discovery en Español connects Spanish-speaking viewers in the U.S. to the world and all its wonder and possibilities. It provides quality programming focusing on bold storytelling across core genres including adventure, ingenuity, natural history, investigation and current affairs. The San Diego Latino Film Festival is thrilled to partner with Discovery en Español to bring you these eye-opening and informative documentaries.
