The last 18 months have taken a toll on many people’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It’s been a challenging time, and many of us are suffering the effects of being in a constant state of worry. That’s why it’s more important than ever to carve out space in your North County home that is specifically for your wellness. And why shouldn’t you? We have dedicated spaces in our homes for working, playing, sleeping, and eating. Why shouldn’t we have a space for self-care? If you want to make a little oasis of wellness in your own home, then here’s what you need to know to get started.
Determine how you would like to use the space
When you think about self-care, what does that mean to you? Perhaps you enjoy a morning yoga routine or reading a chapter of the latest bestseller every night. Or maybe you’d just like a little quiet time alone to meditate or do nothing at all. It helps to determine how you’d like to use your space so you’ll know about how much room you might need.
Decide on a spot
Once you have an idea of how you’d like to use your wellness space, it’s time to pick a spot. You don’t need an entire room to yourself (although that would be nice). You simply need a corner that’s tucked away from some of the more high traffic areas in your home. It’s not advisable to set up your wellness space in a corner of your home office. This will remind you of the work you need to do. Likewise, try to avoid areas near kids rooms or playspaces. It helps if the temperature is comfortable and you’re close to a window that has a nice view. If you have a balcony or patio, you might choose to locate your wellness space there. Other options could include a walk-in closet, a corner of your living or dining room (if it’s quiet at least part of the day), or even the landing at the top of the stairs.
Carefully choose the items for your wellness space
Now that you’ve got you’re space chosen, it’s time to fill it with those things that will help with your self-care. If you’re creating a meditation space, then having a floor cushion and a small table with a candle or flowers on it would be nice. If tucking into a romance novel is your thing, then make sure you have a comfy chair and a reading light. You can also bring items into your wellness place that bring you joy. This could include photographs of loved ones, a small souvenir from your travels, or even a cherished stuffed animal from your childhood. And if your space is in a more public area, consider using a folding screen or another kind of room divider to give you privacy.
Plan to enjoy it
Sometimes the hardest part of starting a self-care routine is simple making the time to do it. That’s why we recommend actually scheduling self-care into your day. Your health and well-being matters. So don’t be afraid to block off times in your calendar that you can devote to taking care of yourself.
