Cozy season is officially here! Even though we may not get snow here in North County San Diego, we can have some chilly nights in winter. And there’s no better way to banish that chill than a cozy home. The good news is you don’t have to break the bank to make your home feel warm and inviting. Use these ingenious tips to make your home feel snuggly, even on a tiny budget!
Use lighting to your advantage
The simplest way to create a cozy feeling at home is to up your lighting game. Think about it — there’s nothing more soothing (and flattering!) than candlelight or a crackling fire in the fireplace. You can easily add warmth by placing candles around your home. And you won’t have to worry about open flames if you use flameless candles. They look remarkably like the real thing. In addition, avoid using harsh overhead lighting or bulbs with a cool white light. These can make a room feel hard and cold.
Get a slipper stash
Another inexpensive way to feel cozier at home is to ditch your shoes by the front door. Instead, keep a pair (or two or three!) of fluffy slippers by the main entrance. When you get home, slip off those outside shoes and put on your slippers instead. Not only will this give you a cozy feeling, but it will also keep your floors cleaner.
Add soft textures
Think like George Costanza, who said he would drape himself in velvet if it were socially acceptable. While you don’t need to get a new velvet tracksuit, you can buy an inexpensive velvet throw for your couch. Add flannel sheets and a faux fur pillow to your bed. Soft textures instantly add a warm and cozy feeling to your home. Plus you’ll love wrapping yourself up in them on those cold evenings!
Frame special photos
Coziness is a feeling, and it can be created just by simply framing a special photo. Put last year’s holiday card in a special frame and set it in a prominent place in your living room. Or use a photo from your travels or even one from your childhood. The memories they will invoke can contribute to that feeling of coziness you’re after.
Go natural
You can create a cozy atmosphere by incorporating natural elements into your home. Pick up a houseplant or a vase of pretty flowers the next time you’re at the store. Or set a bowl of oranges or lemons on the dining room table. Small, inexpensive touches like this will make your home feel cozy in no time.
Don’t forget scents
Finally, smells can enhance the coziness of your home. Use candles or essential oils with warm smells like cinnamon, fir, or vanilla. Or simply make up a batch of stovetop potpourri with items you already have in your kitchen or pantry. It can simmer on the stove all day and will make your home smell wonderful!
