Southern California and swimming go hand in hand. With a temperate climate like ours, swimming is a sport you can enjoy virtually all year. So it’s no surprise that there are tons of places in North County where you can enjoy a dip. Here are some of our favorite places.
Black Canyon Falls
Enjoy a dip in a swimming hole after a beautiful hike when you visit Black Canyon in Ramona. The Santa Ysabel Truck Trail features pools and waterfalls, with the biggest swimming pool located a little less than a mile down the trail. Huge boulders line the edges, and you can escape the sun in the shade of oak and willow trees. There’s also a waterfall that feeds the pool, though it may be dry in the late summer.
Cape Rey Resort
You don’t have to be a guest at Cape Rey Resort in Carlsbad to enjoy a day by the pool. Their poolside cabanas are available for full-day rentals to both hotel guests and local residents. The cabanas have room for 4-6 people and include a whole fruit platter, chilled bottled water, and complimentary WiFi (so you can Instagram your day in real time). Oh, and did we mention the pool overlooks the Pacific Ocean?
For a family-friendly day of swimming in the ocean, try Buccaneer Beach in Oceanside. This is the city’s smallest beach that has a lifeguard tower, but there is plenty to do here. A park right across the street has a basketball court, jungle gym, restrooms, barbecue grills and more. The area in front of the lifeguard tower is for swimming, wading, and body-boarding only. There is no surfing allowed in this area. The best part – parking in the lot across the street is free!
San Marcos Community Pools
The City of San Marcos operates not one, but two public pools. The Cerro de Las Posas Pool operates from February 3 through June 19 and offers open swims, swimming lessons, and a splash pad. The Woodland Park Pool opens on May 26 and also offers swim lessons as well as a one-meter diving board, water slide, wading pool, lap pool, and picnic area. Entry fees for both pools are $4.
Washington Park Pool
Located in Escondido, the Washington Park Pool is a great place for families to cool off in the summer. The pool is open from June 10 – August 11 and offers a swimming pool with a slide as well as a children’s wading pool. Cost for entry is $4 per person. Children 3 and under are free.
LEGOLAND and CHIMA Water Park
Finally, there really is no better place for water fun than Legoland. Visit the CHIMA or LEGOLAND Water Park and build a LEGO raft and float down the lazy river, ride the Splash Out waterslide, play on the Soak-N-Sail, or play in the Lion Temple Wave Pool. It’s fun for all ages, from your littlest ones to those who are young at heart.
